Basic Info

Ecuador is a small country located in the north-west region of South America. It has 4 different natural regions (Amazon, Highlands, Coast and Galapagos Islands).
To understand more its size we can compare it with the state of Colorado in the US or to the size of the United Kingdom in Europe.
Ecuador has a total population of 13,5 million people.
Ecuador has 5 World Heritage declared by UNESCO.

Passport and Visas

Valid passport at the moment of entry and leaving the country. For the moment Ecuador does not require visa to any nationality.

Medical

It is very important you bring your own medical insurance. In case of emergency, we do have very good medical facilities (hospitals) in the main cities (Quito and Guayaquil).

We recommend you check with your local travel doctor for the advisable vaccines when traveling to Ecuador. However you should ask your doctor about typhoid and hepatitis A.

It is important to use a lotion against mosquitos in the Coast and Amazon region. Drink only bottled water, specially when traveling through the country. While visiting the highlands (specially Quito), you should consider that you will be at 2800 meters above sea level, therefore ask your doctor about altitude medication. Since ecuatorian food is pretty strong, it is always advisable to take at all times for posible stomach disorders. Make sure you bring sun block lotion, because the sun is very strong in Ecuador.

Language and Currency

Spanish is oficial language of the country. However Kichwa is widely spoken by the natives ethnics groups in the country (specially highlands and amazon).

Since 1999 the local currency in the country is the US dollars. In the bigger cities most credit cards are accepted (Visa, Master, American Express)

Climate:

Coast:
Temperature varies between 20 to 35 ºC.
Advisable to use light clothes, shorts, t-shirts. It is important to bring a light sweater / jacket for the nights.

Galápagos:
Temperature varies between 15 to 30 ºC.
Advisable to use light clothes, shorts, t-shirts. It is important to bring a light sweater / jacket for the nights.

Amazon:
Temperature varies between 20 to 35ºC.
Advisable to use quick dry clothes, because in the Amazon rains frequently for shorter periods of time. Also take light clothes with some light sweaters / jackets for the nights.

Highlands:
Temperature varies between 14 to 18ºC.
Clothes similar to the ones you will use during fall (jeans, t-shirts, sweaters, jackets). At nights it can get pretty cold (14ºC)
